Man, I've had some busy times lately; Disney World, going up to Vermont to see Megan, finally working on Five Star again regularly (and actually making a few pages so far that I don't hate!) and of course, worrying furiously about school plans.

I called the school I was planning on attending, and they told me that it's going to be a challenge to get in with a cartooning/illustration portfolio. The woman I spoke to on the phone said right out that the portfolio review board is "prejudiced" against that kind of work. Something about the master's thesis show. She made it sound like the major reason was because they liked the show to look good, which is the biggest bullshit I've ever heard. What does that have to do with teaching? Maybe I don't want to go there after all. Also, she said that the program was very intensive, and they wanted students who would be prepared for that. How does my genre of work reflect how prepared I am for study?

It made me pretty angry.

To counteract that, the most surreal moment of my trip to Disney World: standing in the World Showcase in EPCOT and realizing that the familiar sounding song on the sound system is in fact, by Hedningarna, one of my favorite Scandanavian folk groups. Somehow, I just never imagined hearing "Bierdna" outside of my headphones.

Well you know, clearly, comic artists draw like that because they're all lazy asses.

There's a Philip Guston show at the Morgan and I went on a docent tour. As you probably know, Guston's work looks somewhat comicky. It irked me like hell because my first year at SVA, my teachers were like "YOU'LL LUV GUSTON HE LOOKS LIKE COMICS" like that's the only thing I could possibly relate to but ANYWAY. The docent is showing the work and starts saying something like "And some people say that Guston works in a similar art style to... if you want to call it art..." and I KNEW she was going to talk about comics, I was just like "SAY IT... SAY IT, DAMMIT."

The fact they didn't even SEE your work and they're telling you this stuff is bullshit.
